A Family Christmas Party

Last weekend we celebrated Christmas with my side of the family.  We had so much fun.

I gave the purple star quilt to my little sister.

I am so happy that she loves it.

Christmas Band Concert

K1 and K2 just had their Christmas concert.  They did a great job.

K2 and the other flutists had a solo in Fawkes the Phoenix.

K1 and the other trombonists has a solo in Carol of the Bells/Greensleeves.

I just tried to upload videos of their solos but Blogger denied me.  If you live close, you can stop by for your own private viewing.

I love Christmas music!

A Big Blue Birthday

K5 just turned 4 years old!

When he woke up he asked me, "Am I really 4?"  I wonder why he is unsure of his age...  Anyway, he had lots of fun.  He got to take a long bath with every toy he could find and not wash his hair.  He played the Leapster for a while and got into his brothers desks and toys.

That night we went to an Aggie women's basketball game.  The kids love seeing Big Blue rappelling down.
My favorite player LaCale was out injured but the Aggies did ok without her.
The ball got stuck between the rim and the backboard.
My SIL does the color on the radio during the games.  She used to play for Utah State and is awesome.
We were sitting around talking during halftime when all of a sudden

K5 loves Big Blue and was planning to ask him for his phone number so he could invite him to his birthday party this weekend.  He got a little bit shy when he actually had the opportunity to talk to him.  :)  After a few minutes he warmed up.
K4 got in on the action by pulling Big Blue's tail.  He was laughing like a crazed lunatic while he tugged.

My SIL and my brother have connections so they orchestrated the whole thing and bought the balloons.  They are so thoughtful!  K5 had lots of hugs for his cousin.

When we got home from the game he opened his present from us.  He peeked inside and was super excited because it was a pillow pet and for some strange reason he has been wanting one for a long time.
It is a panda and he named it Racquetball.  He was actually excited to go to bed with it.

Now that's what I'm talking about.

Ward Christmas Party

Mr. K is an awesome chef.  He volunteered himself and his boy scouts to cook the dinner for our ward Christmas party.  They chopped tons of veggies,

toasted almonds,
and helped cook.

The menu was chicken with hunter sauce, basmati rice pilaf with almonds and lemon zest, spaghetti squash and broccoli, garlic and cheese italian salad, rolls with real butter and for dessert...

triple berry brown butter tart.

It was amazing.  I didn't take any pictures of the food when it was finished because I got distracted eating it.  He is amazing!
How did I get so lucky?

My First Quilt Sandwich

I've been working on getting the star quilt done for Christmas.  I am going to machine quilt it myself so I have been reading quilt blogs and watching youtube videos to learn how to do it.  My next step was to layer the back, batting and top.  The technical term for this is "make a quilt sandwich" so today I made my first quilt sandwich. You start by taping the back to the floor.  I actually had to sweep and mop before I could start the first step.  (K5 needed to be in the picture.)

Then you layer the batting and put the top on.  I had to cut the batting down since for some strange reason the queen size bats were cheaper than the twins.
Basting is the next step and luckily I was able to purchase some special tools on sale a while ago.  The safety pins are bent and the Kwik Klip helps open and shut them so your fingers don't get sore.

They made it much easier.

Some of the blogs showed rolling the quilt in from the sides to reduce the bulk between the needle and the machine.
I am so excited to start quilting but it will have to wait until tomorrow.  Maybe just a few more youtube videos...

Cutting our Christmas Tree

Yesterday we all bundled up and piled in the car.  Then we drove up into the mountains to cut down our Christmas tree.  Mr. K gave each of the boys some sort of a weapon tree cutting tool.

We followed the path of a tree being drug through the snow up the hillside and back down
until we came to a river.  The tracks led right up to a pipe that spanned the river.  That certainly didn't stop us.
Then the hunting began.

We finally found the perfect trees.  (We cut one down for our friends, too.)  Mr. K went to work on one and K1 got the other.

Heading back with the trees.

When we got to the (icy) pipe, I thought Mr. K was going to try to walk across balancing with the trees.  I stood back ready to take pictures of what was bound to happen.
I guess he thought better of it and decided to scoot across.
K5 told me that it was fun to cross the pipe the second time.  He and K4 thought they were ninjas.
While the boys were waiting for me to cross, they cut out some ice from the river to make an ice sculpture.  (Mr. K used to own an ice carving business.)

We made it back to the car where we had hot chocolate.

After a little bit more playing in the snow, we peeled the wet coats and hats and gloves and snow pants and boots off and headed home.

What an adventure.
